DNA Testing

This site focuses on Autosomal DNA, a test which can be taken by both men and women.  The test is currently available by both FamilyTree DNA and 23andMe, as well as Ancestry.com (in beta).  Right now prices for an autosomal DNA test are at about $290.  At this time, my preference is for FamilyTree DNA, though the industry is growing and evolving, so that might change.

What is autosomal DNA? As I mentioned, it's a DNA test that can be taken by both men and women. Instead of focusing on just your direct maternal or paternal line like mtDNA and Y-DNA testing does, it gives DNA results for your entire family tree for the past five generations. This is also the test that will give you a breakdown of your ethnic makeup.

I created a video to explain the way autosomal DNA is passed down through the generations:

For more information on DNA testing, check out Relative Roots Genealogy Webinars by Elise Friedman. The introductory webinar is free and very educational.

If you are a male with the Powell surname, interested in testing your Y-DNA, check out the surname group at ftDNA.
